Lithotectonic units are the building blocks of regional geology, each piece representing a distinct and complex geological history. Even if central for scientific progress, definitions of lithotectonic units vary greatly among different regions and are often confusing or contradicting. It is crucial to revisit and harmonise definitions, especially in an era where geological information is becoming part of knowledge systems.

Revision of the Brussels Formation

The formal description of the Brussels Formation has been completely revised by Rik Houthuys, Noël Vandenberghe and Johan Matthijs, and is now available online. This concludes many years of discussion and (field)work by the authors and the Paleogene-Neogene subcommission.

The discussion document and Neogene stratigraphic tables on the revision of the Neogene stratigraphy of Belgium are available online. Comments can be submitted to the president or the secretary of the Subcommission for Neogene and Paleogene stratigraphy by October 30, 2022 at the latest.

In 2020 the stratigraphic subcommission published a review of the current status of the Neogene of northern Belgium in Geologica Belgica. Thereby new insights arose and new paths for further research were defined. The review is furthermore the starting point for a new formal stratigraphy of the Belgian Miocene and Pliocene which will be published on the website of the National Commission for Stratigraphy of Belgium.

The results of the stratigraphical review will be presented during a one-day seminar.

André Dumont Medal 2020 awarded to Markus Aretz

On Thursday 17th of September 2020, the Geologica Belgica André Dumont Medal 2020 will be awarded to Markus Aretz from the Université Paul Sabatier, France. The ceremony will take place at the Geology Depratment, B18 Allée du Six-Août, Sart Tilman, 4000 Liège. Information and registration at julien.denayer[at]uliege.be.

Field trip 2 October 2020: The revised stratigraphy of the Eifelian

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the earlier announced the Geologica Belgica field trip visiting several outcrops of the Eifelian in the south of Belgium will now take place on the 2nd of October 2020. Call for reporting temporary outcrops

In the framework contract VLA17-4.1, the VPO (Vlaams Planbureau Omgeving) is subcontracting assignments for describing and documenting temporary outcrops with geological value (https://dov.vlaanderen.be/page/tijdelijke-ontsluitingen). These can be construction sites, but also active or abandoned quarries. Until now, five outcrops have been documented and a sixth is ongoing (Langenberg, Diest). The results can be consulted in the DOV-explorer, by performing a search for "VLA17" in the drillings layer.
