New books: Belgisch Marmer, Watervoerende Lagen en Grondwater in België/ Aquifères et Eaux Souterraines en Belgique, Geologie van Vlaanderen (wordt verwacht september))

 

M.De Ceukelaire (S) ouvre la séance en présentant les points 1 et 7 de l’agenda. Le Président rejoint la séance un peu plus tard et préside ensuite la réunion.

Le PV est approuvé à l’unanimité.

 

1.    Lower Paleozoic

 

Un nouveau Membre a été créé dans l’Ordovicien supérieur et fait l’objet d’une publication. Deux publications pilotées par les membres de la sous-commission ont été publiées concernant le Cambrien et l’Ordovicien. Deux autres sont en préparation dont 1 sur le Silurien. Jan Mortier, doctorant à UGent  termine sa recherche sur la Bande de Sambre-et-Meuse. Les travaux de cartographie financés par la Région Wallonne ont débuté dans le Massif de Stavelot-Venn et le Massif de Rocroi.

 

2.    Devonian

 

Notre collègue B. Mottequin (paléontologue IRSNB) remplace E.Goemaere comme secrétaire de la sous-commission pour le Dévonien.

 

Discussion sur les formations de Booischot et de Heibaart proposés par D.Lagrou et collègues. Les deux formations restent comme proposition sur le site car M.Coen-Aubert  1) n’a pas reçu les informations relatives à l’âge de la Formation de Booischot et 2) trouve que la Formation de Heibaart est identique à la F. d’Aisemont. Le sujet n’est pas tranché et la commission demande la reprise des contacts entre les auteurs et la sous-commission.

 

 

3.    Carboniferous

- Les avancées concernent le Carbonifère inf. de la Campine. Une synthèse est publiée sur le site et est maintenant approuvée par la CNS. Il est demandé d’ajouter le cadre biostratigraphique à partir des publications.

- E. Poty travaille sur les cycles orbitaux à l’intérieur des séquences de 3^ème ordre de l’Hastarien.

- Carbonifère supérieur : intervalle surtout piloté par M. Dusar. Rien de neuf depuis la dernière réunion de la CNS. Un manuscrit relatif à la lithostratigraphie du sommet du Houiller pour la Campine a été refusé par Geologica Belgica. Le sujet reste donc à retravailler et sera suivi par la sous-commission.

 

4.    Permian-Triassic-Jurassic

La sous-commission n’est pas représentée lors de la réunion. Il n’y a pas d’information sur l’activité du groupe. Le secrétaire contactera le P et le S de la sous-commission pour relancer les activités du groupe et l’envoi d’un représentant lors des prochaines réunions.

 

5.    Cretaceous

-        - no new contributions from the Cretaceous subcommission

-        - a new proposal has been posted concerning the Turonian deposits in the south of West-Flanders see website: http://ncs.drupalgardens.com/cretaceous/proposals-and-discussions. This proposal presents a twofold subdivision of Turonian deposits, corresponding to the former Dièves and Fortes Toises, which may be redundant because of equivalency to existing stratigraphic schemes. Nevertheless it has been introduced because these lithologies are easily identifiable in boreholes (drilling mud turning green) and existing schemes, defined in the Mons basin and Tournai basin are not sufficiently specific to establish reliable correlations (put differently, they allow for too many different lithologies to be included in a single lithostratigraphic unit). This the subject will be discussed in the subcommission.

 

6.    Paleogene-Neogene

De voorstellen Brasschaat-Merksplas, worden  besproken in de commissie en na de rechtzetting van een paar kleine foutjes goedgekeurd. NCS keurt het voorstel goed.

Er is een consensus over de datering van Merksplas : Bovenste Plioceen; terwijl Brasschaat Pleistoceen is.

Ook de subcommissie Quartair keurt deze voorstellen goed.

Piet Laga neemt ontslag als voorzitter, er zal dus op de eerstvolgende vergadering een nieuw bestuur worden samen gesteld.

Michiel Dusar merkt op dan na de afwerking van het H3O project nieuwe voorstellen zullen worden ingediend voor Neogeen en Quartair.

 

7.    Quaternary

 

De subcommissie Quartair is momenteel de volgende onderwerpen aan het finaliseren:

- De zandige eolische afzettingen (Holocene en Pleistocene ouderdom, dekzandafzettingen, duinafzettingen en stuifzandafzettingen) . Eerst volgende vergadering 23/6.

- De holocene fluviatiele afzettingen in het Scheldebekken. De eerstvolgende vergadering is gepland begin september.

De subcommissie is uitgebreid met een nieuw lid: Bastiaan Notebaert.

La sous-commission est très active et se réunit 4x par an.

 

La formation a été un succès avec 26 participants représentant toutes les universités et institutions géologiques du pays. Une licence avec code d’accès a été confiée à chaque institution sensu lato. Il est demandé aux possesseurs de ces codes de les utiliser avec diligence. Les codes ne peuvent être distribués de manière large mais sous contrôle. Prochaine mise à jour en 2016 (+/-100$)

 

NCS Where to go next?

The following analysis and strategy outline  was formulated by the chairman  and discussed by the commission.

The present status of the NCS website can be considered on cruise speed with regard the lithostratigraphy- at- formation-level. In this respect, the activities of the different sub-commissions andthe national commission itself have arrived in a routine application of the procedures foreseen forinitiating discussions, proposals and ratificationsof formations and groups. NCS ‘s main objective since 2006to have the Belgian lithostratigraphy readily available in a continuously update de electronic version at an easy to consult website has now been realised and the maintenance of the site is assured.

Regarding lithostratigraphy, the next step NCS should take is adding the descriptions of the members, and eventually beds, to complete the lithostratigraphic inventory. It is proposed that each subcommission makes the existing descriptions of members in the subcommission’s stratigraphic range available to the webmaster who will post these existing descriptions on the site under the heading ‘proposals’. Obviously the status of ‘proposal’ can only be used if the subcommission agrees on the description of that member. If there is disagreement in the subcommission it is an option to post these descriptions, accompanied by the diverging opinions in the subcommission, under the heading ‘discussion’; this can be a method to seek reaction from the broader stratigraphic community. This procedure would allow the NCS to quickly ratify a whole lot of existing and accepted members to the lithostratigraphic inventory bringing it also to the level of cruise speed .

The lithostratigraphic units on themselves are useful instruments for mapping, for describing rocks in outcrops and boreholes and they are often sufficient for geo-engineering purposes. However to make use of these units for paleogeographical basin reconstructions , for the study of the sedimentary history in time of these basins and for international inter-basin correlations complementary stratigraphic tools are required. Biostratigraphic zonation is the widespread classical approach using different types of macro- and microfossils ; however also magnetostratigraphy , radiometric dating, cyclostratigraphy ...are available methodologies . The interpretation in terms of stratigraphic sequences, or sequence stratigraphy can be considered as the new integration of all stratigraphic, sedimentological and even mineralogical and geochemical data in cycles related to base-level fluctuations with time. The potential of correlating sequences between basins, and eventually demonstrating globalbase-level fluctuations as is attempted by many authors, depends heavily on accurate resolution of the timing of the sequence boundaries.

In the past, the stratigraphy of Belgium has been at the forefront of stratigraphic developments and has received international recognition. The volume Geologica Belgica on Chronostratigraphic units named from Belgium and adjacent areas(Dejonghe (ed.), 2006) presents a synthesis of otherwise dispersed internationally relevant chronostratigraphic data on Belgian sections. Very detailed biostratigraphical data are available and NCS should play a role infacilitating access to these data to all possible interested parties. In addition to biostratigraphic data also magnetostratigraphic data, radiometric data, astrochronology studies, sequence stratigraphic schemes and isotope stratigraphic data are available for some time intervals. NCS has the role to make these data accessible to all stratigraphers and geologists in general. NCS will do this using its website and organise the information under the heading‘Chronostratigraphy’ .

All sub-commissions are asked to provide three types of information to bring the site up-to-date in a short delay : a list of key literature and preferably synthesis papers , key synthetic figures e.g. sequence stratigraphic schemes, a short text of maximum 2 pages describing some main observations e.g. regarding the correlation status with the international standard chronostratigraphy, biochronostratigraphy,sequence-chronostratigraphy, time-scale ...

NCS will further investigate how to bring the data in a suitable format to make correlations possible to standard international stratigraphic schemes of the TS-Creator type.

In order to valorise the work of the stratigraphic commissions for the Belgian geological community its is proposed that each subcommission organises at least once a year an open scientific meeting with presentations of scientific work in progress, new developments , ..... in their stratigraphic time interval. This open meeting should be announced broadly and well in advance. NCS will organise at least biannually a national scientific stratigraphic meeting , a request formulated by the National Committee for Geological Sciences.

 

- Le site WEB de la Commission est maintenant géré par M. De Ceukelaire; le SGB a payé la cotisation pour 2014.

- la bibliographie de certaines chapitres du volume 2001 devrait être ajoutée in extenso (à regrouper ?) : une solution doit être cherchée comme cette bibliographie apparemment n’existe pas électroniquement à Geologica Belgica .

- Etat du Web site de la CNS : Il faudrait compléter les informations pour la sous-commission pour le Carbonifère, notamment la liste des membres de la sous-commission.

 

Avec l’accord de l’éditeur S.Louwye, le président se chargera d’annoncer des nouvelles du CNS dans le numéro suivant du bulletin de contact de Geologica Belgica , les Miscellanea Geologica.–

Aussi les dates des réunions ouvertes des sous-commissions pourraient être annoncées dans les MG.

 

 

- A titre informatif : MDC présente les derniers ouvrages publiés et disponibles au SGB (Belgisch marmer ; Watervoerende Lagen en Grondwater in België / Aquifères et eaux souterraines en Belgique). Un ouvrage sur la géologie de la Flandre sortira de presse en septembre 2014 (édition Geologisch Genootschap , UGent ).

- présentation des données disponibles sur MARS (http:// www.mars.naturalsciences.be/geology) : bibliographie (Prof Paper, Memoirs) forages et échantillons de la lithothèque.
